“I’ve always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian, and where I’m from, we don’t have a lot of places like this that are just open to people to come and see,” guest Shelby Koenig of Maryland says. DECADES OF DEDICATION: Dr. Susan Tonkonogy has spent 42 years of her 54-year immunology career at #NCStateVetMed. Hired in 1982, Tonkonogy was the first female faculty member in what`s now known as the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology and is the longest-tenured active faculty member at the college.
Over her career, she has seen the College of Veterinary Medicine and the broader scientific community grow to better support women pursuing careers in the sciences and has herself mentored generations of female scientists. "It`s so nice to look out over a sea of students and see so many more female faces than when I was studying," she says. "There are also many more women to look up to now."
